The Armidale City Council Access Advisory committee serves two functions:

  1. To promote the needs of improved access as defined under Section 23 of the Disability Discrimination Act.
  2. To lobby for access in the Armidale local area by making recommendations to Council and where appropriate local businesses and other agencies.

Objectives

  • To make recommendations with respect to Planning and Development and Building Policies in the Armidale Area so that developments related to private enterprise, local government, state and commonwealth properties and facilities meet the access needs of the target population locally.
  • To ensure existing Council properties and facilities are upgraded to make them accessible.
  • To assist in the development of appropriate staff training across all Council Departments to ensure that Council provides services appropriate to the needs of people with disabilities.
  • To provide opportunities for training to the business sector to raise awareness of the benefits of improved access to business and the whole community.
  • To promote employment practices at Council which do not discriminate against people with disabilities.
  • To lobby at State and Federal levels of government on access issues as necessary.
  • To facilitate the referral of maintenance issues that is the realm of Armidale Council to appropriate areas within Council for timely action.
