Servants of the Maeljin, Bale Hounds are corrupt werewolves who are said to be part of the "ninth tribe," one so profane that the others refuse to speak of it. It is said that the ninth member of the Firstborn (Soulless Wolf) swore allegiance to the Maeljin long ago, becoming a shell that feasted on the sins of his tribe so that the evils of the Bale Hounds would remain ever a secret, even from the watchful eye of Mother Luna.
