Timeline

  • 1922 – Born in Jeddah, in what was then known as the Vilayet of the Hejaz, later the Makkah region of Saudi Arabia
  • 1932 – King Abdul Aziz al’Saud defeats the ruling al’Rashid clan and unites most of the bedouin tribes and Vilayets of the Arabian Peninsula, forming the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
  • 1934 – With her parents’ blessing, travels to England for her education under the protection of an Uncle working there
  • 1938 – The first oil discoveries in Saudi Arabia. Samira graduates from high school early and commences study at the University of Oxford completing a Bachelor of Arts with Honours, Majoring in Ancient History
  • 1945 – Samira returns home but feels frustrated and stifled by the restrictive culture. In a desperate bid to escape the repetitive pleas from her parents to marry and the ever-watchful and frightening mutawwa she starts looking into job opportunities in Africa or Europe.
  • 1946 – Begins working at the Egyptian Museum of Antiquities in Cairo as an archivist.
  • 1947 – Superiors at the Museum start allowing Samira to attend dig sites to help document the findings, but she is never allowed near anything that is expected to yield a ‘significant’ find owing to her lowly status as a woman
  • 1948 – The commencement of the Arab-Israeli war. Samira is pulled from all on-site projects she has been working with and is confined to the archives of the Museum until the conflict ends in late 1949
  • 1951 – Is in the vicinity of Karnak helping with a small dig when the last known pieces of the Tempest Stele are found by another team nearby. She tries to get permission to look at the pieces but this is denied. A crestfallen Samira returns to Cairo and alternates most of her time between the Museum and the Great Library of Cairo where she learns a great deal about the ancient culture and religion
  • 1953 – Meets a young woman named Nyssa at the Great Library and they bond over mutual love of Ancient Egypt and frustration at the misogynistic culture of the Arab world
  • 1956 – Nyssa is reported missing while on a dig. Despite fervent attempts and pushing by Samira’s supervisors she is not found. Samira goes against tradition by reciting the Salat al-Janazah, a funerary prayer usually recited by men only, for Nyssa, assuming her friend has gotten lost and died
