Fire Brigade

The Great Lakes Rural Fire Brigades are gearing up for a late summer burn, through the Wootton Mountain region. When questioned on the strange timing, the local Community Liason Officer had the following to say “Given the cooling temperatures leading into Autumn, and the large amounts of rain we have been receiving, we feel that now is the time to start on this years back-burnings. Wootton has needed this for quite some time, so its first on the list. Addtionally, the Summer Total Fire Ban has been repealed early.”

Storm Recovery

Local recovery after the recent dramatic storms is going well, with emergency crews moving at above national average speed, and crops and general plantlife growing back in, with minimal damage to large trees. With this late-season vibrancy, experts estimate the area may be able to recoup losses from the drought, but local farmers are still cagey about the ongoing effects.

Magpies

Local avian experts are concerned with the prevalence of swooping magpies in the area, especially given that swooping season nominally stopped in late October. Authorities say not to worry, and that the birds are confused over the rapidly changing weather. People are advised to walk swiftly away from magpie nests, and especially avoid wearing bright or metallic hair pieces, which seem to aggravate the birds more. If you have particularly aggressive birds on or around your property, please contact animal control on 02(XXXXXXX)

The Great Outback Exhibition- Opening

When you look up into the starry night sky and ponder your place in the universe, do you ever think to yourself what does space smell like? Pungent, it turns out. As one would expect. No, not the waft of blue cheese, more "like spent gunpowder" says Gene Cernan, Apollo 17 astronaut and the last man on the Moon. Other astronauts have described it likewise. While the Moon walkers weren't able to sniff the lunar surface, they did collect the abrasive snow-like Moon dust back into their spacecrafts, where NASA reports it set off a distinct pong that was lost on re-entry to Earth. Even set off a case of "extra-terrestrial hay fever" in one astronaut! What do you think space might smell like to you? Bring your family and find out at the Forster-Tuncurry Science Museum where The Great Outback Exhibition has put on display various asteroids and other space-assorted rocks collected from across the country for the public to sniff inspect. The Great Outback Exhibition also showcases various collections and specimens from the outback itself, proudly displaying the beauty and diversity that Australia has to offer.

Local News

In late reports, a total fire ban has been issued across Forster-Tuncurry. Citizens are advised and encouraged to report any suspicious activity to the police as the council announces stricter punishments for arson following a resurgeance of bushfires across drought-stricken NSW. Along the coast, we're looking at a cold front coming in from the east with a warning issued for high seas and strong winds. Powerful storms are predicted to hit the coast within the next month, with fishermen preparing to dock and lock their vessels ahead of the expected potientially catastrophic surges. In other news, local police have uncovered a prostutition ring running in the outskirts of Tuncurry with the rise of drug-related crimes across the region. Despite efforts to keep the streets clean, reports from crimewatch have revealed a disturbing trend in the rise of drug-related issues and the decline in tourist related activity during the colder months. Something that the council plans to combat. One such plan of attack has been the re-introduction of national expos to the region with the inclusion of The Great Outback Exhibition at the local science museum, featuring taxidermied animals, collected asteroid samples and the Matrix Opal - one of the largest opals to have ever been discovered in Australia! No End to the wild Weather

In tonight's news, freak storms continue to lash the eastern coast, causing turmoil for drivers and travellers during the Christmas Holiday season. Several accidents and missing persons reports have come in amid speculation that the storm could continue for up to another month, with raging tides and rising water levels. Residents are reminded to call emergency services in the case of emergencies only. In other news, despite the weather, Forster-Tuncurry hosted an amazing Christmas ball this month, with much of the proceeds going towards children charity organisations and Feed the Poor. New community housing for the homeless still currently in development has been delayed by the weather, resulting in the homeless fighting for beds within public housing, refuges and hostels. Keep safe out there citizens, don't drive if it's dangerous and with the season of giving coming to an end, perhaps you too can consider giving a little charity to those less fortunate.

Great Lakes Advocate/ Our Community/ Babies, Obituaries and Weddings

First Comes love then comes marriage. Sorry ladies of Forster-Tuncurry, one of the districts most eligible bachelors is off the market. Just over 18 months after meeting on the beach, Ajax Faulkner and Harriet Lyle have tied the knot in a private family ceremony over the weekend.

Ajax Faulkner, Son of town locals and community pillars Marshall and Athena Faulkner (dec) has been one of the most eligible bachelors in the district, but no local lass has successfully caught his eye since long term girlfriend April Kiss.

Harriet Lyle shot to fame with her successful Surfing campaign, winning the 2019 Toyota Pro Surfing Contest hosted in Port Stephens. In a disastrous turn of events, she was severely injured while competing in the 2019 Michilis Mattara Surf Classic. Due to her recovery from the injuries sustained in that event, the happy couple decided on a private family only affair.

We at the Great Lakes Advocate congratulate Ajax and Harriet on their wedding and wish them a long and happy life together.
