New to Roleplaying

If you're on this website, then we tend to make certain assumptions about your familiarity with role-playing as a hobby, and indeed some assumptions about your familiarity with Live Action Role-Playing (LARP) and of the games being run.

However, if you've made it this far and that's not the case, there are already significant resources that detail the hobby.

New to the Camarilla

The Camarilla is both the official fan club of White Wolf, but also an international network of LARP games that are designed to be set as one continuous chronicle that runs in parallel with real world time. Games are set in one of the genres of the New World of Darkness.

The chronicle is divided into two components. The first being the live game, which is the primary means of gaming as a LARP. These games typically happen at regular monthly intervals, though this varies from domain to domain. The live games are the primary means of exposition, character interaction, and plot progression. The periods between the live games is collectively known as downtime. During these periods, characters may submit reports of their character's activities (see below).

The global chronicle is divided into national affiliates, each of which has a significant amount of autonomy on their own national games, provided they comply with the requirements of the universal addendum (see below). The Australian Camarilla organisation can help you touch base with features of the organisation as a whole.

New to the Genres

Genres published by White Wolf and sanctioned for play in the Camarilla Chronicle consist of the following core games:

Changeling: The Lost
Mage: The Awakening
Vampire: The Requiem
Werewolf: The Forsaken
Geist: The Sin-Eaters

Additional games have been published but are not currently sanctioned for play:

Hunter: The Vigil
Promethean: The Created

To find out the status of what games are available for play in Sydney and more information specific to those venues, please click on the navigation links at the top of this page.

New to the Rules

The game aspect of LARPing is governed by a series of rules that are designed to facilitate and simulate the imagined supernatural and dramatic action that occurs between players. The World of Darkness games use the Mind's Eye Theatre rules. These are published in book or electronic format. You can buy a copy yourself, or potentially borrow one from other players.

If you find you don't have a head for rules, you can still play in games. Rules related issues are overseen by the VST (Venue Storyteller), but you can generally ask for help from other players to explain things for you. However, a good grasp of the overall structure of the game will add to your enjoyment of the game, and having a basic read is thoroughly recommended.

Beyond that, each genre has their own core book that is dedicated to exploring the setting, the character building, and mechanics that are specific to that genre, which can also be bought in electronic or printed format. Below are links to various genre demo games that gives an overview of each ruleset in pdf form:

Changeling: the Lost demo rules, on the first 7 pages.
Mage: the Awakening demo rules, on the first 14 pages.
Promethean: the Created demo rules, on the first 16 pages.
Vampire: the Requiem demo rules
Werewolf: the Forsaken demo rules, on the first 9 pages.

Addenda

Due to the global nature of the game, addenda have been created to help VSTs ensure that published materials are treated within the local chapter with some consistency, and to help regulate the rarity of certain components of the game.

They are fairly long series of protocols, and it is primarily the responsibility of the VST to ensure that their game is compliant. However, for the sake of completion and transparency, they are presented here if you have a desire to check out the rules that govern our games.

The Camarilla Global Addenda detail rules that govern the organisation of the Camarilla's global setting.
The Camarilla Australian Addenda covers further refinements on these rules to adapt them to the Australian environment.
The Camarilla Australian Bylaws covers legal aspects of the affiliate's governance. It has some useful stuff for new players including the hierarchy of the organisation, and roles that club officers perform.

Individual Chapters

Each chapter is required to provide a VSS (Venue Style Sheet), to detail the setting, character, and other rules guidelines that are specified by them for their venue. It is strongly recommended that before participation in any local game, that a player read the VSS to get an understanding of what sorts of play style will be employed, and what themes the game touches upon. This may help players create characters suited better for the venue, and enhance their enjoyment of the game.

Due to the recent chronicle reset, a number of the VSSes are in various stages of revision. For the time being, please refer to the various wiki pages for details on those games.

What is the Camarilla?

The Camarilla is an international social organization sanctioned by White Wolf, Inc. which revolves around the gothic-horror genre set in White Wolf's World of Darkness. We are world-renown for our continuous Live-Action Role-Playing (LARP) game that spans ten countries on five continents. Fan Club In the Camarilla our primary focus is to bring the fun in fandom through member involvement, to encourage individual creativity and personal expression, and to serve as a medium where people may congregate with a common interest in the vampire mythos and gothic horror. Creating your own vampire or werewolf character to roleplay at certain Camarilla Chapter functions, designing costumes, writing fiction and poetry, and creating artwork are just a few of the examples of how members can contribute to the club. Community Service We are also a community service organisation, creating a sense of community amongst ourselves and the greater community around us. In this vein we encourage members to not only expand their creative and literary horizons, but to also improve the neighbourhoods and cities in which they live. Misconceptions We wish to convey in this introduction that the Camarilla's focus on the vampire is as a romantic and fictional figure, and we avoid delving into the blood drinking or violent aspects commonly associated with this creature. Fandom has gained a sufficiently bad reputation from roleplaying games already without encouraging the misconception that we are a cult of some kind. For further information, check out the The International Camarilla Homepage or the The Australian National Camarilla Homepage.

What is Live Action Role Playing (LARP)?

Live Action Role Play, usually abbreviated as LARP, is an extension of the more common table top role-playing game. LARP is quite different from table top gaming and is best described as improvisational theater--a play where you are an actor who creates the script of the story by taking actions and making presentations. Because of its theatrical nature, LARP is more accessible to a much larger audience than many role-playing games. Players need to know far less about the rules and mechanics of the game though they must be more willing to become an actor and present the embodiment of the character they are trying to portray.

How do I join ?

Membership Restrictions The Camarilla Australia accepts members regardless of race, religion, disability, sex or creed. In all matters, the Camarilla is non-discriminatory in its outlook and its administration. Due to mature themes experienced in roleplaying, the Camarilla Australia will not accept persons under the age of 18 as members. New Members New Members are always welcome in the Camarilla. Your best option is to speak to or e-mail the Domain Coordinator for the Sydney Domain. Your other option (for instance from non-Sydney residents who just stumbled in here) is to look at the National website , which has a page all about Membership. Renewing Membership All information needed in regards to Renewing Membership is available on the Membership form . Early renewal will still be possible, up to 3 months ahead, and will still attract an early renewal prestige bonus. The date chosen for renewal is September 30th every year. Questions and Problems If there are any questions or problems regarding membership, the first point of contact should be the Domain Coordinator .

What is the Harbour of Darkness ?

The Camarilla is organised on a 'pyramidical' structure, with the International Camarilla at the top, who co-ordinate all the different National Camarilla groups, such as the US, the UK, Scotland, Ireland, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Netherlands, and of course the Australian Camarilla. The Australian Camarilla then has several Domains, being geographical locations such as cities. Each Domain then runs several different games, or Venues, each centered around one of the 'species' in the World of Darkness game. The Harbour of Darkness (known as the HoD) is the Camarilla Domain for Sydney, and it co-ordinates all the Sydney Venues, coordinating larger-scale events, controlling the interaction of the roleplaying games between the Venues, and generally making sure things run as well as possible

How do I make a Character?

New and existing members introducing a character to the global game start with a character concept and background and work this into a Character Sheet model. This gives the character the ability to be played in the Camarilla games. Characters advance through the accumulation of experience points awarded for game participation. As the games are based in the World of Darkness System provided by White Wolf, the World of Darkness Storyteller Rulebook and its expansions are used for character creation. These rules are then combined with the Minds Eye System that enables character to be played in a LARP environment. The Domain Storyteller or Venue Storytellers should be contacted in regards to character creation and any information regarding characters and rules. Members can also earn the privilege of playing more complex or experienced characters through service to the club. Both reward systems are not based on time but on participation and organizational support and is equally available to all members.
