The Black King

This is the King who ruled over his board,
Sheltered and protected by his black-armored horde.
But even as he brought new pieces into his relentless fight,
His army was slowly dismantled by desperate young White,
Despite living within the house that the King built.

Here is the Bishop, shaven and shorn,
That stands by the Queen, now so forlorn.
Though the beautiful Knight desperately tries to fight,
He is unable to challenge the new Rook's might,
As they war within the house that the King's built.

Here is the Pawn with the board nearby,
And a Rook with mischief twinkling in his eye
Who checked the King who ignored the pawn.
And the furious pieces charged forward with glee,
So they could destroy the house that the King built.

Here is the Rook that knows no fear,
His life would cost his tyrant dear.
And though the Queen sees the trap, it is sadly too late:
Her hand is frozen in place, and there will be no checkmate,
For she lives in the house that the King built.

This is the Queen, who found it hard,
To save herself, and the pieces she guards.
The Rook checked the Queen, and she was forced to withdraw,
As the stalemate ended their eternal war.

And so ended the house that the King built.

Overview

The Black King. The Master of the Game. Champion of the Board. Lord of Black and White. There are a thousand names that the Lost typically associate with the fearsome Keeper, but the first is the most commonly used. Even then, it's used in a whisper, even by the most brash and brave Changelings.

The trouble is getting them to agree as to what he is.

Appearance

Perceptions and memories on the Gentry vary; some distinct features remain constant, though, such as his terrifying size, his majestic crown, and over-sized, hulking armor.

The Durance

Memories of the durance are vague, only sought out in dreams and flashbacks and sudden, terrified memories. They involve violent battles and terrible deaths, as captives were slowly built and modified into the needed pieces to occupy their Keeper's violent, incomprehensible game. In Arcadia, the game doesn't follow standard rules. Some pieces were shining, inspirational creatures that could lead entire armies forward, while others were nigh-impossible to slay.

All memories include one moment, however. Black had never lost a game under the leadership of the Black King, but suddenly, for once, the tide had turned. Driven by their furious bloodlust for the monster that had taken them, White charged forward, swarming across the board like a tidal wave in a furious sequence of moves... only to freeze, falter, as Black found itself in stalemate.

From there, nobody really remembers what happened. It was chaos, as the rules of the game fell apart, and the Black King stood there, frozen and unable to understand what had occurred.
