Personal Information

Appearance

John stands 180cm when taking good posture, and around 90kg, an average frame with a few years of the quiet life adding softness to a once honed body. Faded, distant hazel eyes, grey-white, short beard and a swept back side-part of matching grey-white hair, coupled with the telltale sag of pale, mottled, wrinkled skin, to show a most uncommon trait among those like him: John is old of body. Somewhere in his late 60's, though it's hard enough to tell as is, the stress of a hard-lived life makes it harder still, and he certainly doesn't make effort to cast light on the shadows of his past. Sometimes, he appears without beard, or hair, or both, stark changes to an otherwise egregiously unremarkable old white man.

Personality

Quiet, calm, and reserved; John may not be a collection of the finest etiquette, intellect, or wisdom, but wherever his mind truly sits, it sits with a history of remaining jovial at the dinner table with terror - and wherever his skills sit, suggest perhaps a professional relationship with said dinner guest. He creaks and groans when interacting with chairs and stairs, wears glasses to read the newspaper, sports clandestine hearing aids, and has a telltale shake to his hands, and occasionally his speech, that isn't always present. A little dotty, and a little cheeky, but in a polite, endearing, almost disarming way, John's quiet nod and bitten tongue belie no finesse with words, but at the very least enough self-awareness to ascribe to the tenets of Don Schlitz's The Gambler. John is quiet-spoken, and walks with alarming softness; he does not command respect, or the atmosphere of a room, nor seek to, but sometimes, when he speaks, unexpected others listen, and it's not quite clear why.

There's a disarming element to John, and it comes in the form of presentation: he fills the silhouette of a creaky old man near the end of his days, enough turns of the clock to have had his body and his values tested, broken, and built anew a couple times over. Were he just a man, there would be little more than a dark stain on some some papers, in an old filing cabinet, in the back room of some dusty government office, vaguely noting an impactful, but unsurprising history of a vaguely impactful, now unsurprising man.

But John is a Cainite, and that raises many questions; questions of pain, of memory, of age. When asked, John's faint smile and glimmer in his dulled eyes could be so aptly applied to the humors: that of melancholy.

Mortal Days

Society had forsaken and forgotten the impact John's life had on the world long before he got old; it willingly forgot not long after the war ended, keen to put the blight - and the responsibility - out of sight and mind. Long service and a row of ribbon bars means little in the grand machine of the waking world of men - the black bars, 'redacted' stamps, and generic 'classified' responses all across his service record do little more than pique the curiosity of the morbid and the obsessed, but not the government, or social services. Age only served to further his obscurity, a black bar veteran among veterans.

John had his marriages, though none stayed overlong, and none bore children, entirely by choice. Eventually, more of his time went into supporting his fellow veterans and their families than into what little of his existed, let alone what remained as he aged. John was always self-sufficient, was blessed not to suffer any physical ailment that required constant medical assistance, and receives a pitiful veteran's stipend from the government, but little else, living alone for most of his post-marital life and into his old age.

Most don't have the time, know, or care enough to keep tabs and check in on an old man that isn't having troubles from which they can pretend to save him.

Kindred Nights

The problem surrounding John in the Kindred world is one of facts, the few known of him, and the fewer still those that know him are willing to share. His mortal life, the details of his service, less of a concern to the Kindred than the curious case of his sire, the selection and time of his embrace, and even his clan - all things upon which John keeps a right tight lid. It's known quietly among select Anarchs that John is Unbound, though anything beyond that is shrouded in the deepest shadows. He was definitely embraced before the Sect War, however, and his absence from the ranks of the Camarilla may have something to do with that. John was considered an Autarkis for a good deal of time, but he seems to share a history with both Clyde and Keith.

Timeline

  • 1935-60 - Born, raised during WW2. Entered training and service post-war, at appropriate age; did not serve in Korea.
  • 1960-80 - Served first major deployment in Vietnam. Continued to serve a wide and varied career until late 1970's.
  • 1980-00 - Enjoyed as many years of civilian life as years served.
  • 2000 - Never saw the turn of the century.
  • 2000-20 - Quietly, but 'publicly' established as an Autarkis that is best left alone, perhaps after shocking involvement in the Sect War, and 'polite' rebuke of the Camarilla. Details re: coterie and Anarch history pending further ties.

Conversations

Rumours

  • A conversation is said to have taken place between representatives of the Camarilla, and John. It was polite, brief, and the Camarilla representatives did not appear to be on the front foot. Nothing seemed to come of it.
  • Clyde and John appear to have history - if only given the way Clyde seems to act whenever they speak.
  • John used to go to church. He doesn't anymore.
