Situated across the road from the docks, The Loading Bay is the local Maritime Union stronghold. Badly needing a coat of paint, the building itself is unassuming, an A-frame sign out the front advertising $5 pints, steak night on Tuesdays and the hours you can expect the skimpy barmaid to be working the bar. Walking inside the interior is dark, the smell of beer and cheap spirits heavy in the air. A coin operated juke box sits in the far corner and a couple of pool tables are well frequented nearby. The main area in front of the bar has several stools, a TAB booth and overhead screens showing the latest racing and pacing results from around the country. Further back are chairs and tables where hard working dock workers can sit with a counter meal and a beer at any time of the day, catering for the 24 hour shift work of the clientele.
