Mathieu Philippe Gregios was born in 1643, the youngest son of Jean Etienne Gregios, a French Creole fur trader, merchant, politician and slave holder in Louisiana and Misouri.

The Gregios family were early settlers in St Louis, Misouri, joining other ethic French migrating to the area after the Lousiana Purchase. There was a lucrative fur trade in the town, and much of it was dominated by ethnic French families. Jean Gregious quickly become known as one of the more prominent “river barons”, traders with vast wealth and political connections. Mathieu remained at home until his late teens, with the expectation that he would assist the family business. Sadly, as the youngest son, with no prospects of inheriting the family business for himself, Mathieu left the family estates and travelled to New Orleans to find his fortune with but a seed of capital from his father.

Mathieu was fond of the luxurious life he had lead until now, and despite having quite the talent for business, his first few ventures in New Orleans failed miserably. He fell into a life of debauchery and womanising, mainly rich daughters and widow of New Orleans. He would seduce them with his fancy words and promises of marriage before cruelly leaving them jilted and poor. This could only continue for so long before other seedy elements caught up with him, and so to pay off a debt, he took a position as muscle in a local Burlesque Theatre, La Chanson de Plasir (The Song of Pleasure).

Here his business talents shone. Initially starting a muscle, he quickly established his skill at procuring some of the most talented artists in the local area and beyond. She sweet talked the patrons, and used his name to make several political and business deals that benefited the theatre. He married twice in the next 3 years, and was divorced twice, his wives citing his debauchery and spousal abuse. He would have lived and died a comfortable life if not for one night after closing.

Mathieu had always had an eye for fine things: Fine wine, fine jewellery, fine women and fine entertainment. As it happened he also had a fine singing voice. None would have picked it, and few knew, but on evenings late after all the patrons had left, Mathieu would often sing as he closed up the theatre. One evening in 1668 he was doing just that when he caught the attention of an Ancient Kindred, who unbeknownst to him, was the owner of the theatre. Vashti was entranced by his singing voice.

Mathieu had thought he was alone when he was approached by a young teenage girl. Initially annoyed that a child would be out disturbing him, he soon realised there was something extraordinary, and ancient in the eyes of this girl. Her intoxicating voice and stunning beauty captivated him, and he fell under her spell. He would do anything for her. And so, when offered immortality, he readily accepted. Mathieu only spent a year with Vashti before she entered torpor. He took over running La Chanson de Plasir, and waited for his sire to rise again. While he waited he bent his hand to painting, an artform Vashti was expert in. Knowing that she held a deep regard for another of her childer La Belle Dame d’Luminere, he painted a picture he hoped she would love. Titled “Lovers in a Garden” it was a prised piece in Vashti’s gallery for years until it was lost during her travel to Australia (the piece turned up in Canberra at the Toreador Salon in February 2014, it had gone missing from a travelling art exhibition in Melbourne).

Mathieu has remained in New Orleans since his embrace, and has run La Chanson de Plasir. In the Kindred court, he has used his political skills to gain influence and position for the Toreador, and still has a reputation as a ladies man. He has embraced several childer, mainly artists of remarkable beauty of skill, but sometimes a mortal lover has been given the embrace as well. One of his childer, Henri Fornier was repudiated by Vashti in 1868 when he embraced a mortal performer whom Vashti was grooming for embrace. Mathieu took control over Vashti’s New Orleans House in 1899, when she left the city prior to her relocation to Australia. Mathieu’s great Grandchilder Josephine was sent to Canberra in 2014, to study painting in the art school founded by Vashti. She lives with Vashti at her haven.
