The Sea of Storms, the Eternal Storm and many other terms refer to the violent winds, rains of molten glass, white-hot metal shavings or acid, the surging waves of plasm that Spectres use to ride at the gates of Necropoli, and the violent electrical discharges of forked, ball and sheet lightning that can have devastating effects upon a wraith's corpus. The Tempest is the catch-all term for the environment inhabited by Spectres and the occasional horrific plasmic form.

Geographically the islands that wraiths call home such as their Necropolos or Stygia or the fabled Far Shores, are rare areas of solidity amidst the shifting, thundering environment of the Tempest. Navigation in the Tempest is not an easy task; for those who have the Art of Argos, their services are highly prized by those who must risk a journey in the Tempest. For those without a guide, a Byway is the only alternative that doesn't include probable disorientation and increased risk of being waylaid by Spectres.

Byways

Sometimes a natural feature, such as a string of islands or a river, more often made by wraiths, a Byway is a pathway through the Tempest. While the legend that Spectres cannot set foot upon a Byway are patently false, it is true that the roads of Stygia do not shift or move in the same manner that natural paths sometimes do. For those that know the network of Byways through the Shadowlands, they provide a reliable method of Navigation.

A warning to the neophye traveller - the visibility of a Byway fades very soon after leaving the path. Wraiths have been rescued by passing Harbingers who have wandered for days and yet were but a minutes walk from the Byway they stepped off. Distance and time can become strange things to those lost in the Tempest.
