The Illubris System

Illubris in the Askellon Sector
Map of the Illubris System

Illubris is a small, backwater system situated between Desoleum and Thaur in the Askellon Sector. The system is effectively a vassal to the hive world Desoleum - supplying prometheum and lesser support materials to assist in the upkeep of Desoleum's factories. In return, Desoleum provides a boot on the neck of the criminal elements of Illubris (as well as most of its political independence) in the form of a subchapter of the Desoleum Arbites - the Sanctionary Bondsmen of the Oaths Involute (or the Sanctionaries for short).

Desoleum itself is run by the Consortium - a trade organisation of hundreds of competing interests serving under Lady Desoleum - which has its fingers in many systems across the sector. It maintains a very contract-bound social order, every person's role and pretty much all social interaction is determined by their oaths (carried around in their oath-cogs) - which govern fealty and obligation in all things.

The ruling elite of Illubris are members of the Consortium. Three noble families - House Beon, House Cassus and House Rhell - vie for control of the system in an eternal political struggle.

The system itself is fairly small, with few truly habitable worlds:

Illubris I and II are dead worlds - barren deserts too close to the sun for anything to live there long. With the proper equipment expeditions have proven that humans can survive there for short periods, but most of these were either lost to the conditions or came back with little to show for their courage.

Between Illubris II and Illubris Prime is an asteroid belt separating the inner system from the rest of the planets of Illubris. Some mineral content has been dug out of there but overall it's believed that the deposits are too meagre for anyone to consider building an industry on it. Scavengers and pirates have been known to set up small bases here, making the asteroid belt (along with most of the inner system) not worth the majority of good Imperial citizens' time.

Illubris Prime is the main centre of the Illubris system. It has four - formerly five - orbiting hive spires (the alpha, gamma, delta and epsilon stations). When these were originally established they were standard Imperial void stations, but over the millenia they were built upon endlessly until they were as much hives as the cities on the planet's surface. The void hives are used as the primary residences for the nobility of the system, as well as the main seat of power for the Ecclesiarchy, while the majority of the system's population resides on the surface of Illubris Prime in the Illubris, Corinus and Beta hives.

Illubris IV is a volcanic deathworld. The Mechanicus maintain a small city of sorts here for research purposes. IV does also have some small feral tribes of humans who eke out a very poor existence and maintain some trade relations with the Mechanicus, but are otherwise pretty insular.

Illubris V is the primary resource of the system - ships scoop raw prometheum from its atmosphere for refining on Illubris Prime. This world has seven moons (all of which are jungle death worlds) and an orbiting Mechanicus void station.

Illubris VI and VII are generously termed "agri-worlds" in that they are used for food production. Although too far out to be properly habitable, artificial habitats have been constructed on both for the sole purpose of farming, and their nutritiously balanced (but not very popular) produce is used (along with a lot of traded imports) to support most of the system.

The Illubrian Dramatis Personae

The Inquisitors

Inquisitor Zefran

Age: ??? (appears late 30s?)
Build: Powerful (2m/120kg)
Inquisitor Zefran is an imposing man who appears to wear power armour with the sigil of the Inquisition emblazoned across the breastplate as his casual attire. A man of unshakeable faith (or as the less devout would say, an Emperor-botherer), Zefran seems like he would be as much at home wading into battle as he would delivering a briefing to the fine upstanding Imperial citizens he's forced to stand at attention in an Arbite holding room he's had them hauled off to.

Subtle and nuanced like a slab of rockcrete or a fine brick aged carefully and then rammed down your throat, Zefran fights the Great Enemy wherever he finds it.

Inquisitor Ianto

Age: ??? (appears ???)
Build: Slight (1.7m/80kg)
Inquisitor Ianto is strange. Dressed in black robes with a hood drawn down past his eyes, he seemingly appears from nowhere and returns back to it when he's done.

Ianto is clearly a master of information. He apparently knows precisely when things will happen, often before anyone knows that those things are things at all - let alone that they might be going to happen. His instructions are often cryptic or just plain obscure, and his particular chosen enemy seems to be the future itself.

House Beon

Descendants of Lady Illun de Beon, the Rogue Trader who first settled the Illubris system, House Beon holds the governorship of the system. Generally known for their noble military traditionalism.

Lord Illubris, Lionus de Beon

Age: 220 (appears in his 40s)
Build: Powerful (1.9m/100kg)
House Beon has for many generations has held the notion that their descent from a once powerful Rogue Trader house equates somehow to an ancient naval military family tradition. Lionus is an exemplar of this supposed military traditionalism - with strong views regarding discipline, honour amd uniforms. He himself is never seen not wearing a uniform that vaguely resembles that of an Imperial navy admiral, an affectation he apparently copied from his father (and his father before him). According to rumour, a significant number of House Beon have undergone training in the Planetary Defense Force although whether this was done at his order or to make good with the old man is unknown.

Generally considered a fair (if strict) man, Lionus de Beon is a fairly well liked planetary governor, however he is unmarried and has no known heir which means that likely his successor will be his nephew - the son of his late sister.

Florian de Beon

Age: 24
Build: Slim (1.75m/65kg)
Florian is Lord Illubris' nephew, but apparently has little to no interest in politics. He is well-known for his literary and scholastic pursuits, often attending social gatherings only to spend the entire event with his nose buried in a dataslate or tome. Rumour is that he has a romantic/idealistic streak.

Ceris de Beon

Age: 20
Build: Slender (1.7m/60kg)
Ceris is Lord Illubris' niece and Florian's younger sister. She has strong ties to the Ecclesiarchy and is rumoured to have been personally tutored by high ranking members of the local Sororitas. Otherwise Ceris is a bit of a dark horse - she makes appearances at all the necessary social gatherings but never does anything much to distinguish herself from all the other noble ladies.

House Cassus

House Cassus is known for its lavish tastes and ostentatious displays of wealth. Although rumour has it that they are heavily invested in the Faceless Trade (Askellon's extremely illegal black market in xeno artifacts) nothing has ever been proven.

Lady Emperatriz Cassus

Age: 183 (appears in her early 30s)
Build: Svelte (1.75m/65kg)
Lady Cassus is possibly the most visually striking of all the major system nobility in Illubris. Her most immediately obvious feature is the mask she always wears - a solid gold cast of her own face, eyes closed, which starts at the tip of her nose and runs to her hairline where arcs of gold from the mask are worked into her dark hair. Visible through her hair are gold filligree cerebral implants suggestive of intellectual enhancements and an augur array of such fine craftsmanship as to make a Mechanicus weep. This combined with her usual form-fitting dress of liquid gold with matching elbow-length gloves and some form of elegant and complex golden mechanical footwear makes Emperatriz a walking pillar of golden light.

Lady Cassus is rumoured to be a Magos in her own right (although alternative rumours place her as either a Logis or Artisan), but although she does have significantly influence amongst the Adeptus Mechanicus any tech-priest will refute the rumour simply by pointing out her lack of mechadendrites.

House Rhell

House Rhell has a reputation for scheming, underhanded politics and general ruthlessness. Common wisdom says that Rhell coinage almost always costs more than it pays for.

Lord Octavian Rhell

Age: 140 (appears in his 50s)
Build: Skeletal (2.1m/65kg)
Octavian Rhell is the current head of House Rhell, a position he assumed after his cousin Aetius Rhell died under mysterious circumstances. Octavian is clearly voidborn - being abnormally tall and thin. Innumerable rumours circulate about him, all making him out to be sinister and highly dangerous although whether he really does have a perfect memory and secretly control the entire system's criminal underworld is probably more likely to be fiction than fact.

What is known is that Octavian has managed to keep House Rhell in profit after Aetius nearly drove their finances into the ground and consequently seems fairly secure in his position as the head of his House.

Order of the Golden Ledger

The Order of the Golden Ledger is a Minor Order Famulous of the Adeptus Sororitas which operates out of a large central convent on the Illubris Prime delta void hive. Their primary role in Illubrian society is to record the noble lineages and act as advisors and negotiators, but they have taken on a very active role in the Ministorum - acting against what they see as an excessive Mechanicus influence in the system.
