The Hangman (also known as Hang Man) is a fictional supernatural character that originated as a creepypasta Internet meme created by Something Awful forums user David Barrel (also known as "Bright Spark") in 2017.[1] It is depicted as a short and thin humanoid with a featureless head and face and wearing a black hoodie, the only clear identifiable mark is bruising around the neck from a noose that he reveals to his target just before they die.

Summoning

According to the myth the only way to summon the Hangman is to committee suicide and stream is live on social media naming the bullies that drove you to your death.

Depictions

Stories of the Hangman commonly feature him stalking, abducting or traumatizing people, and murdering cyberbullies.[2] The Hangman is not confined to a single narrative but appears in many disparate works of fiction, typically composed online.[3][4] Fiction relating to the Hangman encompasses many media, including literature, art and video series such as Wasps Legos, wherein he is known as The Suicide King. Outside of online fiction, the Hangman is slowly becoming an internet icon and has influenced popular culture, having been referenced in the video games and generated video games of his own, such as Hanging: The twisted knot and Hanging: The Stalker. He has also appeared in a film adaptation of Wasps Lego, where he was portrayed by Doug Jones, and an eponymous film, where he was portrayed by Javier Botet.

Cases

Beginning in 2018, a moral panic occurred over the Hangman after readers of his fiction were connected to several suicides where the victims left messages naming their cyber bullies and asking him to punish them.
