Appearance
Hayes is a slim, older gentleman who wears thick spectacles and a severe expression. He is as verbose as one would expect of a well-educated man, and speaks with a cultivated Australian accent. He favours neat, no-nonsense business casual attire with pocket protectors for his pens, and as an astute note taker, he is hard to separate from his signature clipboard.
Personality
Hayes believes he is God's gift to the Kindred. If anyone can ever cure the Malkavians, he WILL be the one to do it -- the simple pleasure of watching his little puppets dance is just a perk of the job. Everything and everyone else is a means to his ends.
Mortal Days
In life, Philip Hayes (born 1906) was an accomplished psychiatrist from a well-connected family practicing in the pre-WWII mental hospitals of Sydney, Australia. When the massive influx of veteran patients experiencing "shell shock" returned home from the war, his interest in deconstructing the human mind beyond the blunt approach offered by medical science at the time inspired him to return to university and pursue a PhD in psychology. The work of Sigmund Freud and his theories surrounding psychoanalysis struck Hayes as having a meritous basis, but a laughably flawed execution, and so he resolved to make it his life's work to improve upon Freud's methods and eventually rise far above the Austrian neurologist in fame and accolades.
By 1968, Dr Hayes had indeed risen to a prestigious position within his field. His name, and his work, was on the lips of all his colleagues and contemporaries, and in his constant search for new and interesting patients to broaden the horizons of his research, a Malkavian came to him seeking answers. Before long, Hayes was embraced, that he might be a shining light to the rest of his patient's clan, and carry on his work long after his own mind would otherwise wither and die.
Kindred Nights
(Somewhere between 1969 and 1985), Hayes' sire and favourite patient was killed by the Sabbat. To escape their growing strength, and the suspicion of his mortal colleagues, Hayes travelled to Adelaide, where he ingratiated himself to the local court, and infiltrated the faculty of Glenside Hospital to gain access to its vast swathe of mortal patients. He continued to fulfil the purpose for which he was embraced, acting as counselor and confidant to his local clanmates, including Seneschal Carmichael. With the permission of Prince Miranda, he sired a small handful of childer to study as patients, keeping them tightly under his wing, including one Agatha Skinner, a paranoid schizophrenic.
Like all of his mortal patients, he treated his childer well, but always viewed them more as pets than people; objects of interest, lab rats to be prodded and poked to produce the desired result, sometimes locked in their rooms for weeks at a time during his own depressive episodes. Only once he had fully slaked his thirst for knowledge on each of his unfortunate childer's mental peculiarities would they be released, that he might further observe how they interact with society with minimal oversight.
(Somewhere between 1985 and 2000), Dr Hayes was named Malkavian Primogen of Adelaide.
Recent History
In September of 2014, his childe Agatha, having been released a few years prior, embraced Alexandra "Lex" Kelly without permission, earning the punishment of final death by order of Prince Carmichael. Dr Hayes stepped in, petitioning the Prince to spare Ms Kelly, that he might assume strict custody over her and study her as a new patient -- for the good of the clan, of course. Carmichael agreed. Hayes only managed to spend little over a year with his fresh acquisition before Michelle Smythe and Andronikos orchestrated a security breach in January of 2016 that helped Lex to escape and defect to the Anarch Movement.
