Judith Doulton
Personal Information
Appearance
With such a diminutive stature, Judith might look almost sweet; her heart-shaped face and steel blue eyes, framed by bangs and a loose tumble of brown hair, seem typical fare for your standard Daeva. Less typical though are the denim, leather, metal studs, skulls, and band logos she wraps herself in to bolster the toughness of her image. She looks more a roadie than she does a creature of the night, but there's something familiarly captivating about her nonetheless, and the same air of confidence about her.
Personality
Judith is about as laid back as a Kindred can get, and tends to judge people favourably until they give her a reason not to. She prefers all Kindred treat eachother as equals, and tries to lead by example, often to the chagrin of traditionalists who put too much stock in their status. Judith fancies herself an honest and principled lass, and she will never stand idly by and allow herself or another to be subject to unjust or unfair treatment. She is friendly and agreeable to those who treat her and her friends with courtesy, but vicious and stubborn towards the rude, manipulative, and pretentious. She can be very spiteful towards those she percieves as having done her or a friend wrong, especially if they represent authority.
Mortal World
Judith was born May of 1962 in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy, Manchester, to Percy and Andrea Doulton. The peace, love and rock and roll of the 60s and early 70s resonated with and helped foster a carefree spirit in a young Judith, which despite her religious upbringing, was encouraged by her mother. Her father, hard working but neglectful and at times abusive, did not approve, and did his best to stamp those useless notions out of his daughter's head-- when he had the time.
In 1975, Andrea, suffering from untreated depression and an unhappy marriage, took her own life. The loss hit hard, sending what remained of her family into a downward spiral. Percy turned to alcoholism to cope, and he became even more violent and vitriolic towards Judith. While she found some solace in her passion for and connection to rock music, Judith nonetheless caused a lot of trouble in her staunchly Catholic high school as she came to terms with her loss, her increasingly difficult home life, and her burgeoning sexuality. Abuse from teachers and students alike provoked her into starting countless fights. She stole, vandalised, and even tried to set one of the school buildings on fire. At 17, Margaret Thatcher's reign of terror began over working class Britain, and things began to worsen exponentially, especially once Percy discovered his daughter was gay. Judith began drinking, and experimenting with whatever drugs she could get her hands on. Before the year was out, she had stopped skipping classes to drop out entirely, and she ran away to London with dreams of becoming a musician.
1979 in London saw a whole new breed of music begin its rise from obscurity to the forefront of British youth counter-culture; rebels, runaways and revolutionaries, rejecting the oppressive government crushing down on them, were emboldened by the fiery spirit of Punk Rock but inspired by the harder sounds of early Heavy Metal bands. The New Wave Of British Heavy Metal gave birth to now-legendary bands like Iron Maiden and Def Leppard, who filled the niche that groups like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath had left in their wake. Judith was there in the middle of it all, and she was utterly in love with her new-found freedom. Living rough on the streets for a month or so, it wasn't long before she fell in with a gang of young anarchist drop-outs like herself. They became something of a new family for her, giving her strength in numbers, the occasional place to sleep, and the skills to survive-- be it in a knife fight, or on a cold winter's night.
Finally free to express her sexuality openly without fear of rejection or revulsion, Judith found her first love in 1980, in a singer and artist from Essex named Lori. Together with some friends, they started a band, eventually deciding on the name Havoc and playing the occasional pub gig when there was no one better to fill a spot. While Havoc struggled to get off the ground, their rehearsals helped Judith hone her skill with guitar, and expanded her understanding of musical composition. Her friends and the few shows they performed also introduced her to a handful of the various drug dealers that buzzed around the night-life of London like flies around corpses. By 1982, with the pittance Havoc was earning from the shows they could scrounge together, and little more earned from busking in the street, Judith was lured into dealing pot for a small drug ring operating out of London's East End. She did well for herself, and found she had a knack for encouraging her potential customers. She kept mostly out of trouble with the law, and moved their product as quickly as it would sell, but with new commitments and her own use growing heavier, her relationship with Lori began to deteriorate. Eventually, they and the band fell apart.
By 1983, Judith had already recruited many of her gang friends into dealing for the ring, and had moved on to slinging coke. Impressed with her progress and initiative, Judith's supplier Tom finally introduced her to the ringleader and his master, a Kindred calling herself Charlotte Devine.
Information Known By Kindred Society
- In London, Judith has a reputation as either a generous, truthful and reliable Kindred, or an insolent, classless, upstart trouble-maker-- depending on who you ask.
- The biggest Junkie in the Adelaide court, Judith has shown remarkable ability to bounce back from her intoxication.
Timeline
- 1983 - Charlotte, taking a special interest in Judith, draws her into a passionate obsession and allows her to become completely dependant on her affection before embracing her. Judith is initially overjoyed to belong to Charlotte, to learn from her, and to explore a new world she had no idea existed, but she is turned off by the viciousness and rigid power structures seemingly inherent to Kindred society. Her excitement also sours when she realizes her new lifestyle forbids her from following her dreams of stardom.
- 1984 - After a year of devotion to each other, Charlotte grows restless and impatient with Judith and the slow loss of motivation she suffered after her embrace. Judith, likewise, could still not forgive Charlotte, despite her feelings for her. Tempers fraying at both ends, they explode in a fight, and Judith leaves their haven in anger. She returns the next week to find Charlotte and her ghouls have left the city without a word or trace. Judith is devastated.
- 1985 - Judith falls in with the Carthian Movement, and takes control of Charlotte's old drug ring, expanding the business into central London with the help of Kindred with territory in the area. She picks up playing guitar again, determined to master the instrument even if she'd never sell an album. Despite her new Covenant ties, she prefers mortal companions to her fellow Kindred.
- 1985-89 - Judith has little to do with the court of London as a group, aside from infrequently attending Carthian meetings and the odd favour and business deal.
- 1990s - The arguments and rhetoric of Humanist Carthian Randy Priest resonate with Judith, increasing her interest in the Movement and its potential. Over time, she becomes good friends with his broodmate Frank Donovan, sire Lewis Arlington and childe Holly Grant.
- 1999 - Judith stands as one of Randy's main supporters when he makes a move to claim Praxis of London, which fails dismally after Holly's warning to the Invictus. Randy is bloodhunted, but eventually torpored, and his supporters are indebted to the Prince with major boons. Because of this, Judith and Frank fall out with Holly.
- 2000s - After working off her debt, Judith drops back out of her dealings with the court to avoid any further trouble. She spends this time focusing on developing her business, and becomes extremely possessive of a Kine woman named Sybil. She takes Sybil as her ghoul and primary romantic partner.
- 2010s - Gaining back her confidence to push for a place at the table again, Judith returns to the Carthian meetings with renewed vigor and begins recruiting neonate Kindred for the Movement.
- 2014 - After finally exhausting the patience of some of the nastier Kindred at court, a sabotaged drug trip sends Judith into a blur of psychosis, paranoia and violence. She frenzies in a crowded bar, killing at least one kine before fleeing into the night. Sybil dies from an overdose. Shaken to her core, and fearing the repercussions of a Masquerade breach under a ruthless Prince, Judith calls in a favour from a friend to get her out of the country.
Recent History
Judith reached Canberra in January of 2015, where she stopped to spend some time with Lady Jessica Daywalt. They had never met, but Charlotte had spoken of her, having Avussed her into the Anvari bloodline decades earlier. Upon Daywalt's recommendation, Judith decided to move to Adelaide.
2015
- February - Judith reaches Adelaide, encounters the Society of the Accord, and makes herself known to the local court. Provided temporary accommodation at the Daeva Haven after an introduction to DukeLorenzo Penthièvre, she immediately begins building up contacts in Chinatown, the local Carthian territory.
- March - With the court showing interest in rehabilitating the Society of the Accord, Judith fosters some attempt at diplomacy with member Melinda Stark, which is hindered by the incompetence of Prince Anton Wolff and violent temper of Sheriff Jack West. She befriends newcomers Niels Bergman and Desmond Kale.
- April - Judith and Jack West spend some time debating possible laws for the Carthian Prince to implement, but their efforts are largely fruitless as it becomes clear Anton lacks the initiative to contribute. Easter festivities with the Circle of the Crone provide an entertaining distraction from politics. Judith establishes her own Haven in Carthian territory.
- May - Judith confronts and berates Anton Wolff openly in court for his mistakes before he steps down to hand Praxis to Clairesse Marguerite. Her diplomacy with the Society of the Accord fails dramatically after trying to convince members Brodey and Jeff to join the court. Demonstrating that their right to freedom from the traditions means more to them than their lives, Brodey forces a confrontation with Jack West and allows himself to be killed by the Sheriff's claws. Judith, panicked by Brodey's supposedly impassioned belief in diablerie, reports what she has learned to the Court, and Prince Marguerite calls a Bloodhunt on the Society, with the stipulation that they first be individually offered the choice to sign a blood oath agreeing to the Traditions.
- June - Judith takes on the temporary role of guiding the newly-embraced Daeva Ariana Trentworth after her sire Peter is killed in the Bloodhunt. Conflicted over his and Brodey's death, and the Society's suspicious lack of aggression towards the court despite them, Judith finally realises that they are not the enemies they had initially thought. After discussing the situation with Duke Penthièvre, who had similar thoughts, she promises to try and salvage the situation as best she can. During the Crone's Winter Solstice celebrations, she picked up the mantle of Carthian Prefect from Anton's ashes and was appointed Priscus Harpy.
- July - Despite making a decent effort to pull the Carthians together after the initiation of two new members and the new arrival of another, Judith struggles with her court responsibilities and turns back to harder drug use to cope with the stress.
- August - Judith begins a brief but passionate affair with Prince Marguerite. Upon hearing rumors of her possible resignation, she conspires with the Carthians to make Jack West Prince in her stead. Judith does not expect, however, for Clairesse to be called away on urgent (and perhaps permanent) family business, and she is deeply saddened that she had flown to France only leaving a letter of goodbye. Nonetheless, the plan to crown Jack goes off without a hitch, and she is made Prince Harpy for her efforts.
- September - Judith works with Jack West to write and help implement Carthian laws for the Domain. She arranges a plan and the necessary funds/legwork for Ezekiel Abrams, Peter's second childe, to get out of trouble with the police by faking his death. Later, Judith sits on the jury overseeing the trial of Mikhail Torre, and advocates for his fair treatment. She also learns that what remains of the Society of the Accord in Adelaide has been destroyed despite her efforts at rehabilitation, and resolves to use her influence in the new Praxis to make sure no other Kindred in Adelaide gets left behind again.
- October - Judith plays for the court at the first Arts and Sciences night of the new Praxis, to a somewhat disappointing result overshadowed by the sudden appearance of werewolves in the city. Judith spends some time working inwards to help clan Daeva, and memories of Charlotte lead her to learn some new things about her capabilities. At the Halloween masquerade ball, she begins a tentative romance with Evelyn Grace.
- November - Judith's ghoul, Gloria, moves in to her apartment. Evelyn Grace defects from the Carthians for the Circle of the Crone, followed shortly by Andrew Blackthorne leaving for the Invictus. Blackthorne informs Duke Lorenzo Penthièvre of Judith's silence about Randy Priest's plot to assassinate his childe, Roxanne Lorainne. Disgusted and ashamed by her own inaction after the Duke confronts her, she begs his and Prince Lorainne's forgiveness, and later visits Desmond Kale for guidance. While there, she learns the extent of the court's disapproval of the Carthian Praxis, and about the mistakes they had made during their tenure; with this knowledge, she advises Jack West to step down from Praxis until the Carthians are better equipped to govern. Jack concedes, and takes on her role as Prefect. Judith's values are deeply shaken, and she finally acknowledges to herself her growing preference of security to freedom.
- December - Court celebrations for the Holiday Season seem to genuinely spread a little much-needed cheer. Newcomer Ventrue Lord Alister Bathory arrives bearing gifts and revelations about his sire and brother, Evelyn Grace and Mikhail Torre, previously thought Mekhet. The deception doesn't phase Judith however, and she and Evelyn continue their "courtship." Judith confronts Andrew Blackthorne over his betrayal of Carthian secrets, ultimately reaching a mutual understanding.
2016
- January - Jack West hands the Praxis over to Lorenzo Penthièvre on the condition that it be returned to the Carthians by the end of June. The Prince offers Judith the position of Herald, which she accepts. With Penthièvre's ascension, Judith is the oldest eligible Daeva for Priscus, and happily takes this position as well. At court, Judith meets Randy Priest's childe Eve (AKA "Lucky") in person after she'd learned of her part in Randy's assassination plot. Judith apologizes for her role in the scheme, and advises Lucky to join a covenant she feels is more suited to her ambitions. Clairesse Marguerite also returns to Adelaide for her amnesiac childe (nicknamed Bruce), causing some mixed feelings in Judith.
- February - Synthblood, an addictive blood supplement, begins to creep into the veins of the general population, and in response, Judith takes steps to tighten control of her herd to rid herself of its influence. Clairesse Marguerite is banished by the Prince, and warns Judith of his plans to crown Blackthorne (now Alexander Black) in his stead; the Carthians begin to plan for this contingency.
- March - Lorenzo Penthièvre retires to Armidale, naming Alexander Black Regent. Judith is not heard from by the Court, and keeps mostly to herself.
- April - Evelyn Bathory goes missing, is presumed dead. Judith attends the Crone celebration, which welcomes five new Carthians to the Movement.
- May - The Carthians tighten their plans for resuming Praxis, with the new blood giving life to some solid laws and enthusiasm. Judith plays the political game, trying to get any swing voters on side before the coming election.
- June - Jack West concedes the Praxis to Alexander Black without a vote. Ariana Trentworth is killed in a daylight arson attack at the Daeva Haven. Both of these factors cause Judith to lose sight of any direction in her Requiem. Visits from Carthian friends help mitigate her downward emotional spiral, but she is left feeling somewhat lost and worthless.
- July - Judith steps down as Daeva Priscus, handing the position to Ezekiel Abrams. The Adelaide Carthians slowly unravel, having lost most of their new recruits. As a precaution to avoid endangering the Masquerade and her safety, Judith enters voluntary torpor.
- August - While Judith sleeps peacefully in Eclipse, Kindred rise and fall. New Daeva Rose Blackthorne, Lucky's childe, arrives in Adelaide with Randy's broodmate Frank Donovan and takes the position of Whip. Judith awakens late in the month, refreshed and with a renewed perspective on her Requiem.
- September - After considerable thought on the matter, Judith joins Alice Redman's Carthian Hivemind with Jack West, Jack Raven and Frank Donovan, finding it an enlightening and overall positive decision. Prince Black is killed in an expedition to the city's Necropolis, leaving Praxis to Ezekiel Abrams. Judith resumes her place as Daeva Priscus.
- October - Jack West abruptly abandons Adelaide, leaving the Carthians leaderless. Alice Redman becomes Prefect in his stead, keeping Judith on as Myrmidon. Judith encounters a particularly crafty entourage of hunters who seem to have taken an interest in the Adelaide Kindred. She makes a deal with a mysterious friend to try and clean up the city and stop the rampant murders, and becomes Sheriff at Tarquin Ward and Prince Abrams' behest. Holly Grant reunites with Judith during a visit to Adelaide.
- November - Jack Raven's investigation into strange newspaper articles sets off a race against time for the Hive to destroy forbidden knowledge, revealing an otherworldly visitor. In an attempt to curb fellow Daeva Saul Rodrigues' criminal behaviour and avoid a clan dispute with the Gangrel, Judith pays new Nosferatu David Jao to steal his pet cat, drawing ire from the Lancea Sanctum for territory violations.
- December - An appearance by Toph Miles of the Goats MC sparks a gang war in the city, disrupting drug traffic and unseating Judith from her position as a stable dealer. When Lucky visits Adelaide to investigate Rose's sudden disappearance, Judith's mysterious friend confirms her death, but also plants seeds of suspicion over Lucky's true allegiances.
2017
- January - Judith pulls a rabbit out of a hat to save herself from a daylight assassination attempt, but loses her grip on her sanity in her isolation and paranoia. Despite this, she stays on as Sheriff when Walter Ovingham-Talbot III returns to claim Praxis and drives Ezekiel from the city. The incident convinces her to plot Gloria's embrace, in order to allow her agency and independence.
- February - Judith lashes out at Lucky after compelling her to reveal a dark secret. She corners Michael Storm into confessing to Rose's murder. With help from David Jao, the court discovers the purpose of a mystery drug syringe she acquired months previously from the Triads.
- March - At a local gathering of national Kindred, Judith has an emotional reunion with Ezekiel, makes peace with Lucky and woos Dame Threadgold, before a poorly conceived order from the Prince gets her shit wrecked by the Mount Lofty werebear.
- April - Some mages cause chaos when they pay the Adelaide Kindred a diplomatic visit; Judith narrowly avoids being swallowed whole by Tiasagi, and is saved from being caught in a shadow realm for centuries by Desmond Kale. She and David Jao take steps towards solving the city's problems with African drug rings.
- May - After her problem-solving efforts fall flat, Judith reflects on her downward spiral in humanity and resolves to make up for some of her moral failings. Viktor replaces Judith as Sheriff when Alder Francis Bolt claims Praxis. She is elected Daeva clan head by default.
- June - The Carthians contract a contagious mystery illness, which Prince Bolt uses as an excuse to persecute and vilify them. Judith loudly and publicly rebels against Bolt's response to the epidemic, resulting in his calling a bloodhunt against her and her coterie. They flee the city.
- July - The Hive takes refuge in Canberra under Prince 8-Ball for some time, collaborating with Carthians and the Ordo Dracul to search for cures for the infestation. Judith comes to terms with the very real possibility of becoming Prince. They return to Adelaide in an attempt to seize Praxis by inciting a vote, unaware the bloodhunt would disqualify Judith's claim.
- August - Threats and provocations from the Invictus draw the Carthians into a violent conflict at Carrick Hill. Judith is torpored by Xavier Bolt and then destroyed by Elizabeth Saint-Matthew.
