Personal Information
Performer, teacher of strings and musicianship.
A privileged upbringing ensued with the main source of family income derived primarily from the working agricultural lands on the banks of
the Carlingford Lough that surrounded the 16th Century towerhouse. The Lime Works also provided substantial supplementary income.
Her ‘deranged’ aunt Maggie (mother’s sister), whom the McGinn family barely tolerated, but allowed to live in one of the decaying farm houses on the property, was Enid’s best friend and main influence in her early life. Some called her witch but Enid knew she was much more. Early in her upbringing Maggie taught her to identify herbs and poisons in the forests and river marsh along the lough. By the time of her 15 th birthday Enid had mastered the craft of preparing complex and unusual poisons, pain relief poultices and sought after medication to cure many known and unknown ailments.
Her mother had other ideas as to Enid’s purpose in life. When she was 3 years old she was given a viola da gamba (considered a ‘prestigious instrument’ and played by many generations of the family) and afforded the luxury of private lessons by a string master. As she grew older Enid showed exceptional skill in performance and composition and an insightful and unusual ability in counterpoint and harmony. She also possessed a gentle manner in teaching others.
Enid’s family was unwilling to help the poor the injured and the starving during civil unrest. Enid used the family castle cellar as a base for smuggling black market supplies to civilians and those affected. Throughout the Easter Rising uprising in 1916, the War of Independence and Irish Civil War, Enid was sought after for her knowledge and skills in cures and poisons. Cured meats, bread, bandages and blankets, as well as original prepared medicinal supplies, pain killers and poisons.
After the civil war ended in 1922 she left the family castle one night, appalled at the selfishness and unshared wealth of the family. She took her only her gamba and herbalist books written and given to her by Maggie. Maggie had died in 1921.
Enid travelled throughout Eastern and Western Europe, studying off many great and old masters. Watching, learning and forging her way as a renowned performer and prestigious teacher.
