The Sabbat can be likened to a religion, and a Sabbat's Path of Enlightenment is their moral code within that religion. There are many Paths that have been developed within the Sabbat, which are detailed in Laws of the Night: Sabbat Guide (pages 67-68 & 75-95).

Higher Paths

Some Paths are considered more Holy among the Sabbat. Cainites that follow one of the "Higher" Paths of Enlightenment" are respected for their devotion to a Holy code:

  • 3 = Devoted
  • 4 = Devoted, Blessed
  • 5 = Devoted, Blessed, Enlightened

Caine

Many Cainites that walk the Path of Caine call themselves Noddists, which occasionally causes confusion in relation to Noddist Scholars that are on other paths.

Those on the Path of Caine strive to become close to Caine. In order to achieve this, members of this path strive to hone their vampiric Disciplines so that they can become the ultimate vampire.

Myths

Cainites on the Path of Caine can commit Diablerie as much as they like: Many confuse the tenants of this path as condoning diablerie. Cainites on this path do not believe that Diablerie should be undertaken willy-nilly. For them, it is a sacred act that should only be undertaken when it helps them to become a more powerful Cainite by enriching their blood so that it has a closer potency to that of Caine. Cainites on this path are less inclined to commit "battlefield diablerie", and are more likely to stake a cainite so that they can diablerise them under pious circumstances, most likely involving purification ritae with their Pack Priest and hours of contemplative meditation. Remember that they are still members of the Sabbat and thus should still adhere to the Purchase Pact and the Code of Milan.

Cathari

Myths

Cainites on the Path of Cathari throw the BEST parties: Actually, this is probably true.

Death and the Soul

Myths

Feral Heart

Beasts believe that enlightenment will come by rejecting the trappings of civilisation and getting in touch with your predatory instincts. Just as Caine rejected the City and slept in the Earth, Cainites on this path prefer to dwell in rural and/or wild habitats.

Myths

Only Gangrel follow this Path: Not true at all. This path is open to all Clans, so long as they're willing to rough it in the wilds and do without cushy comforts, hot showers and technological gadgets

You can't get Status or get a Sect Position if you're on this Path: Not true. You are unlikely to retain a Path rating of 5 if your character becomes a Bishop, but there are many characters that fail to keep a Path rating of 5 for many reasons. Politics should be distasteful to your character, but even animals have an order of Dominance. So long as you liken your place in your pack and Diocese to a wolf pack or a pride of lions or a Stag defending against other bucks, you'll do fine. Sneaky social manipulations however should be left to lessor characters and that's what you'll want to avoid; it's hard to get the smell off.

Honourable Accord

Knights are one of the few Sabbat Paths that retain Self Control over their Beast. Knights believe that maintaining a code of honour is essential to maintaining a civilised Cainite society.

Myths

Knights never lie: If you believe this, I have a bridge I'd like to sell you... Knights are vampires, they can be just as sneaky as any other vampire. If they believe that lying is in the best interest of those they believe they are honour bound to protect, you can bet your arse that they will lie. However, having other Cainites think that they are open and honest in all their dealings helps the Knights maintain the respect of other Sabbat and

Lilith

The persecuted of the Sword of Caine. Lillans have the heretical belief that power comes not through being close to Caine, but rather that it comes through knowledge and understanding of the one that taught Caine the vampiric Disciplines common in Cainites today: Lillith.

Lillans believe in creating life and beauty, and as a result they often create fantastic gardens that would make any City Council jealous. They also believe that life is only created through pain, and that knowledge comes not through success, but through trial, hardship, pain and failure.

Myths

All Lillans are Female: Not true. Just as female Cainites can revere Caine, so too can male Cainites revere Lillith.

Lillans are Demon Worshipers: This is the hardest part of playing a Lillan. Lillith was not an Angel and thus was not a fallen Angel like Lucifer. There are references in the Revelations of the Dark Mother that reference Lillith having a love affair with Lucifer. This is one aspect that can make playing a Lillan so difficult. They are persecuted by other Sabbat for this and many other reasons and you will need to be able to roleplay standing your ground. Get ready for theological discussions, make sure you are read up on the Book of Nod and the Revelations, make sure that your character has the Lores and the ability to refer to these documents and above all, make sure you have an Arbitrator selected and ready to go when someone calls for Monomacy over your heresy and prey that they don't call the Inquisition.

Power and the Inner Voice

Myths

Members of this Path will accept a Demonic Deal if it's offered to them: That is completely up to each character and what the deal is for. Cainites on this path should not want to be enslaved by a Demon, thus they should abhor making any Infernal Deals.

Members of this Path have to be Ductus: Not every Cainite gets to go through their Creation Rites and to come out as Ductus. This Path believes in following your own Inner Voice to find Power. That may come through a Sect position, it may not. It is completely reasonable to play a character on this path that has no interest in gaining a Sect Position, as they have a preference to be a "Power Behind the Throne" that will never put the target on themselves directly. Cainites on this path believe in backing their leaders that show strong leadership (as doing so will mean that you will gain power through their favour). Of course, your character may instead have their eye on becoming a Pack Priest so that they can eventually become a Bishop, and then Cardinal, and then...

Lower Paths

Some Paths of Enlightenment are specific to the Clan that created them. Cainites that follow these paths do not gain the Status for enlightenment.
