GAME INFORMATION

1: Setting

There are three distinct Universes the games are played in:

  • Classic World of Darkness
  • New World of Darkness
  • Chronicles of Darkness

As there is currently only one game in each universe, each VST has creative control over their entrusted universe, notwithstanding necessary changes from the DST, GSTs, NST or MST to maintain continuity across the global and national game.

2: Themes and Mood

This is a World of Darkness. Although there is much variety in experiences available to players, for the most part games try to establish themselves as horror or political thriller stories. It is only in the darkest places that hope shines brightest.

Commonly player characters can be expected to encounter crime, distrust, anger, ambition and treachery. However, the worlds are by no means limited to this. Other popular themes players like to explore are madness, dominance, masochism, sexuality and friendship.

Each venue has its own flavour. Seek out the Venue Style Sheets (VSS) of each for more information.

3: Preferred character types, and restrictions

Character should be suited to their particular genre, conforming to the themes and mood. As such, players should consult the appropriate Venue Style Sheets or discuss concepts with their Venue Story Tellers before seeking approval.

Players are encouraged to make long lasting characters that are involved within the structure drama and action of the various games. “Throw-away” or “Once-off” character will not be considered for approval.

Players are encouraged to have one character only per genre and to play this character consistently until its death or retirement.

Secondary Characters, Second Primary Characters or having more than one character in a Venue is strongly discouraged and will only be approved under exceptional circumstances. Wanting to “try something different” or simply wanting a range of occasional characters at your disposal is not an approvable justification.

Instead, players will be able to request a particular style of NPC to fulfil the role of what would be a secondary PC. In these cases Story Tellers should be more option to negation in the creation of the NPC.

If the player in consistent in their portrayal of the NPC then the character it likely to be considered for Custodial Player Character status or transferral to PC status if the player’s current PC is retired or destroyed.

This process is to assist the Storytellers in creating a stronger universe of Non Player Characters and to ensure that Player Characters are developed and interesting rather than two dimensional cardboard cut-outs.

4: Location of Domain history information

Domain History will be available on the Beyond the Sunset Wiki at - http://wiki.beyondthesunset.org.au/index.php?title=Brisbane_New_World_of_Darkness_Historic_Timeline

2: Custom Rules

DOMAIN WIDE RULES

No Write-Up? No Power!
White-Wolf has published literally hundreds of book each with its own set of powers and unique rules. In lieu of this fact, if a player utilises a rule or power that does not come from a core book, that player must bring a legible copy of rules. If the player does bring copies of an obscure rule and it is brought into question then the power simply will not work or the rule will not apply. Story Tellers are the final arbitrators on what constitutes as an obscure rule.

No Killing Player Characters (PCs) without the Player’s consent
The definition of ‘killing’ in this case includes any action that would render a character unplayable for an entire game. This by no means restricts you from attacking and trying to kill other PCs.
This rule exists to maintain plot and players. It is just a game, and the killing of PCs against the player’s wishes creates a very unwelcome environment that isn’t in the clubs best interest. It often destroys far more plot that in creates.
This is not, however, an excuse for characters to avoid the repercussions of their actions. In the heat of the moment players make mistakes - both the killers and their victims. It is highly recommended all parties find a mutually satisfactory result for any given scene.
The VST still has authority to kill players in PvE encounters.
Venues can opt out of this rule, via their VSS, if they wish to.

If the ST doesn’t know, it didn’t happen
It is the player’s responsibility to keep their ST informed. Our STs were selected because they are friendly folk and they will try to be accommodating, but sometimes events are contradictory and the ST has to make a call on what events actually happened. If the ST doesn’t know what you are doing, they can’t factor it into current events. And they do get the final say on what happens.

Idle characters become DPCs
When a player leaves a venue, they can leave a big vacuum and a lot of plot unfinished. This rule places control of a PC in the appropriate VST hands so that game continuity can be maintained.
‘DPC’ stands for ‘Dormant Player Character’. A character is deemed to be ‘idle’ if the player has not issued any instructions or guidance for the character to the VST for a period of 1 month + 1 game. Both the player and the VST should take steps to stay in touch. The character remains a DPC for 3 months.
While a character is a DPC it is played in a reactionary fashion by the VST in an attempt to ‘park’ the character. That is, to find a way to remove it from play in a way that does not infringe of the active players plot. If the character is a DPC it can be reactivated by the owning player with only Low Approval. This helps the VST maintain the consistency of the character.
Once the DPC period end, the Character becomes an NPC. Players can still apply to reactivate the character through the normal means.

Current Cost Method
Characters are maintained on a current cost basis; this means that they are calculated as if you created the character today on the same amount of XP, less the cost to repurchase burnt willpower or similar items. Players are required to buy off any XP debt before purchasing new items.

CHRONICLES OF DARKNESS

Chronicles of Darkness in presented in one fully integrated VSS covering all genres that are playable in that Universe. That means all the playable races are pre-approved at High. That doesn’t mean it is unrestricted. Some supernaturals are rarer than others. The following have additional restrictions placed on them.

Beasts
Beast are considered Mid approval for this venue.
Demons
Demons are considered Mid approval for this venue.
Hunters
Hunters are Not sanctioned for player use.
Prometheans
Prometheans are considered Mid approval for this venue.
Changelings
Will be available at low 2 months after the source-book is released.

NEW WORLD OF DARKNESS

Dramatic Successes and Failures
Although the rules for dramatic successes and failures as per the write-up in the core World of Darkness material are not sanctioned within Beyond the Sunset’s New World of Darkness chronicle, VSTs within Brisbane will have some narrative flexibility in situations that would normally be considered a dramatic success or failure and may levy minor mechanical bonuses or detriments based on the situation. VSTs will be more generous with penalties and rewards in player versus environment situations as opposed to player versus player situations.
Example (Dramatic Success): Barry character is attempting to track down Don’s character with his heightened senses but Don’s character who is a master of Survival has covered his tracks and rough weather is making visibility near impossible. As a result Barry’s character is reduced to a chance draw and Barry has drawn a one. The Story Teller decides that rather than simply failing in his attempts to find Don’s character, Barry’s character is lead into a cave full of snakes.
Example (Dramatic Failure): Barry’s Character is in a tussle with a cave full of snakes. Fortunately his character is armed with his faithful cutlass and Barry manages to draw two tens in a row. Since the small snakes only have two health levels and are inconsequential antagonists the Story Teller decides that rather than Barry’s character only killing one of the snakes he manages to cut through two of them in a single swing.

Blood Feeding/ Glamour Harvesting/ Mana Gathering (Supernatural Resource Obtaining)
Brisbane utilises a simplified method for determining the quantity of magical resources a character starts game with. A Character adds his relevant merits (such as Haven Location, Harvest, ect.) to a randomly rolled number (1-10) and the resulting number is the amount of magical resource that the character starts game with.
Example: Vlad the Vampire has an average sized Herd and a Haven that is located in the middle of the thriving night-club district (2 Herd + 5 Haven Location). He draws a 5 for his card and adds this to his total.
2 + 5 + Card 5 = 12
Vlad starts the game with 12 Blood in his blood pool or the maximum his blood pool will allow if it’s less than 12.
Certain powers give bonuses to feeding and these are applied with the discretion of the VST. VST may also alter the amount of supernatural recourses a Character begins the game with based on Plot and the general state of the city.

CLASSIC WORLD OF DARKNESS

See the Vampire the Masquerade: Camarilla VSS for specifics

3: Downtime Handling Procedure

Downtimes are the VST’s window into the psyche of characters. Players are encouraged to submit detailed downtimes to their VST so that the game can be better tailored to match player interests and direction.

When there is a discrepancy in past events, a player that can present a downtime as evidence and will be given preference over one that cannot.

For details regarding each venue’s downtime system, please see the corresponding VSS.

4: Crossover limitations and expectations.

With the current chronicles winding down and the closer of many of the venues, chances for cross genre content is limited to the new ‘Chronicles of Darkness’ venue. Other venues need strong story reasons to justify Cross-Genre play, beyond NPCs, from this point on.
